Judith
She wanted to study,
But my father said: no. She was a Jewess.
She resisted the verdict
With a rebellion of her whole body:
She ate pork to feed her pain,
She smoked her soul on Saturdays.
When he died she only whispered:
Father, you called me Judith,
As if you knew the name of my sadness.
Background: the custom was that the religious Jewish women didn't continue their studies beyond some elementary knowledge . Eating pork and smoking on Saturdays were great sins. Of course the sister did it without her parents knowing it. The name Judith (Yehudit)means Jewess.
